Unraveling Data Engineering Architecture and Its Role in AI

Abstract:

As data volumes and user counts within data-driven software systems experience exponential growth, the necessity of acquainting oneself with data engineering and its associated concepts becomes relevant to all software engineers. Additionally, the surge in AI innovations with its strong reliance on data has heightened the significance of the field as a realm of understanding even more.

In this talk we’ll explore what data engineering is, why it is relevant to AI, and delve into its foundational architectural concepts. These include, amongst other, distributed data processing, data ingestion, workflow orchestration, data pipelines, data lakes, and data warehouses.

Moreover, we will navigate through a practical case study that exemplifies an AI-specific data engineering architecture. Through this, we aim to elucidate the interplay of the various architectural components and their relationships.

Mardu Swanepoel (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mardu-swanepoel-000/)

Mardu is a senior software engineer who has been building data-centric software products for the past 5 years. His work includes IoT systems for industrial plants, data aggregation SaaS solutions for multinational corporations, and working on one of the largest music recommendation platforms globally. He has developed and lead teams across the software stack, with a focus on backend, ops, and data domains. Currently, he serves as a software engineer within the data science team at Prewave AI, a startup specialising in supply chain risk and sustainability monitoring based in Vienna, Austria.

In this talk, we’ll discuss how the pillars of the Well-Architected Framework, like security, operational excellence, and performance efficiency, contribute to the success of critical workloads. We will explore design areas, including application, data platform, networking, observability, security, and more. The talk will also present real-world examples and practical recommendations to illustrate their importance.Additionally, we’ll showcase reference implementations for internet-facing applications and Azure landing zones. We’ll learn about specific industry scenarios, such as carrier-grade workloads in the telecommunications sector, where uptime and critical business aspects shape design considerations.
